Joy Division have just finished recording their debut album ‘Unknown Pleasures’ at Strawberry Studios in Stockport. They are parked outside the local chip shop waiting for the rain to stop so that they can finally have something to eat.

Hooky : I’m starving for some chips, me! Fucking ravished.
Barney : You’re always hungry you fat bastard. Can’t you just chew on your fist until it stops pissing down outside?
Ian ~interrupts without realizing that anyone exists in the universe apart from himself~ : Void. Void in my stomach. Void….everywhere. The rain will never stop. Even if the rain stops, the chip shop will have closed by then. Closed forever like the faint avenues of hope that once beckoned to me, but then faded away like a new dawn.
Hooky : Oh for fucks sake, would you shut the hell up?
Ian ~continues on rambling~ …the chippy shutters will be as grey as the bleakest winter inside my soul.
Hooky : What the fucking hell are you on about now?
Ian : You’ll never understand Hooky. You’ll never understand how I feel inside.
Hooky : Look if I stick my tongue down your neck will you stop whining? At least until I’ve had a pastie in me? I can’t cope with this on an empty stomach!
Ian : No way! There’s bits of kebab meat hanging off your teeth…..hanging like thin brown curtains inside a squalid tenement in the Interzone.
Hooky : If you were a real man you would have cupped my balls and patted me on the arse by now!
Ian : Look, I’ll do what I want to whoever I want! I am the talent in this band. You should shut the fuck up before I fire you all.

Ian begins to convulse. The band sit still and watch. He continues to convulse. The band sit still and watch.
It continues to rain outside.
Ian continues to convulse.
Suffice to say, Joy Division did not have chips on that rainy day in Stockport.

ジョイ・ディビジョンは、ストックポートのストロベリー・スタジオで、ちょうどデビューアルバム「アンノウン・プレジャーズ」のレコーディングを終えたところだ。地元のフィッシュアンドチップスの店の外に車を止めて、雨が止むのを待っている。そうすれば何か食べるものにありつけるだろう。

ピーター・フック（以下フック）：チップスが食いたくて腹ペコだよ！バカヤロウ。
バーナード・サムナー（以下サムナー）：おまえはいつも腹ペコだな、クソデブ。雨が止むまで拳骨でも噛んでりゃいいだろ。
イアン・カーティス（以下イアン）：（宇宙には自分のほかに誰もいないかのように割り込んで）空虚だ。俺の腹の中に空虚がある。空虚・・・どこにでもある。雨は決して降り止まないだろう。もし雨が止んだとしても、チップスの店はその時までに閉まってるだろう。永遠に閉ざされるだろう。かつて俺を招いておいて、新しい夜明けのように薄れていった、希望へのかすかな道筋のように。
フック：ああ、勘弁してくれ。頼むから黙ってくれよ。
イアン：（とりとめもなく喋り続ける）・・・チップスの店のシャッターは、俺の魂の中のもっとも厳しい冬と同じくらいに灰色になるだろう。
フック：一体何の話をしてんだよ？
イアン：おまえには決してわからないよ、フック。おまえには俺が何を感じているかなんてわかりっこない。
フック：おまえの喉におれの舌を突き刺したら、クンクン言うのをやめるか？少なくともおれがパンの一切れでも食うまではさ。空っぽの腹じゃあ、こんなの我慢できねえよ。
イアン：やめてくれ！ケバブの肉のかけらがおまえの歯からぶら下がってるぞ・・・無人地帯の寂れた借家にかかった薄い茶色のカーテンみたいに。
フック：お前がもしホントの男だったら、今頃おまえは～してただろうな。
イアン：なあ、おれは誰にでもおれのしたいようにする。おれはこのバンドの主役なんだ。クビにされるまえに黙ったほうがいいぜ。

イアンは震え始める。バンドのメンバーはじっと座ってそれを見ている。彼は震え続ける。バンドノメンバーはじっと座って見ている。
外の雨は降りやまない。
イアンは震え続ける。
こう言えば充分だ。ストックポートでの雨の日、ジョイ・ディヴィジョンはチップスを食べることができなかった。

Cedric Bixler Zavala on Deloused In Cormatorium

...You brought in Flea and John Frisciante to play a little on this (album,"Deloused In Cormatorium", The Mars Volta ). Did Rick bring them in or are you guys friends with them? He's in the video.

Yeah, we're friends with them and they just helped us cuz we needed someone last minute. He did it all in three days, John just got off the plane and...

He just played on one track?

Yeah he played on one track. He does like on Ciciatriz ESP,when it breaks down in to this ambient part, he does a lot of the affected parts. And he also does a dueling solo, it sounds so funny dueling solo, but he does like a dueling thing with Omar on there.

Like doubles it out?

Yeah, he just got off the plane, came over, and I watched them do it. It was fun.

Is it fascinating to watch Rick work with the board and pull stuff out of you guys? were you really floored as opposed to At the Drive-In stuff, was this stuff that really took you over?

Rick is more a preproduction guy. There was other people that were behind the board, but it was primarily like Omar behind the board. It was a colaboration of producers really.

Which is quite good if the label lets the guitar player do some production.

Well he knew what we wanted and Omar is just very good with a lot of that stuff. So Rick's very good with preproduction, organization of the song, telling you if the paintings crooked or not from the back of the room. I mean he's really good with the vocal stuff and kind of honing the common man's ear in to what we do, or every song would be fifteen minutes long.

That's one thing that I wanted to mention, your songs are a little longer than rock standard format now. How do you plan to overcome that barrier? Do you think that the music will just eventually soak through or will you release radio edits like a lot of other groups do.

Yeah, we do radio edits simply just to keep the powers that be happy, keeps the money flowing for us, for whatever money we need. But live that's our medium you know, and everything stretches out. It always changes, the songs don't sound the same and that's what keeps it interesting, and that's why every show is an individual show on to itself.

俺たちは友達で、最後の瞬間に誰かが必要になったときに、助けてくれただけなんだ。彼（フリー）は3日間で全てをやり終えた。ジョンは飛行機を降りたばかりで・・・

プレイしたのは1曲だけ？

ああ、彼は1曲でプレイしてる。Cicatriz ESP の時みたいに、アンビエントなパートに雪崩れ込んだときに、効果的なパートを多く弾いてくれた。戦闘的なソロを弾いてもくれたよ。すごく面白い、決闘みたいなソロだけど、まるでそこにいるオマーと戦っているみたいに演奏していた。

重ねるみたいにですか？

そう、ジョンは飛行機を降りたばかりで、ちょっと立ち寄っただけなんだけどね。俺はそれを見たよ。面白かったな。

リックがボードを操ってあなたたちから楽曲を引き出していくのを見るのは、素敵な気分でした？
At the Drive-In を本当に凌駕することはできましたか？楽曲はあなたたちに驚きを与えました？

リックはもっとプリ・プロダクション寄りの奴なんだ。ボードの後ろには他の連中もいたけど、最もそこにいたのはオマーだな。まさにプロデューサー同士のコラボレーションだったんだ。

もしレーベルがプロダクションを任せるとしたら、どちらのギタリストが本当に優れていると思います？

うーん。ジョンは俺たちの求めていることを分かっていたし、オマーはプロダクションを数多く手がける上で、とにかくすごく優れている。そして、リックはプリ・プロダクションが得意だ。曲をまとめ、全体の絵がゆがんでいたら、距離をとることなしに指摘してくれる。俺が言いたいのは、リックがボーカルに関する仕事や、ごく普通の人間の耳を、自分たちがしていることに対して研ぎ澄ましていくってようなことが、実に巧いっていうことなんだ。もしそうでなかったら、全曲が15分の長さになってただろうな。

私が聴きたかったのもその点です。あなたたちの楽曲は最近のロックの基準からすると少し長いですね。その障壁をどう乗り越えようと考えていますか？いつかは音楽自身がその障壁を流し去ると思いますか？それとも、他の多くのバンドと同じように、ラジオ放送用にカットした編集版をリリースします？

ああ。おれたちは編集版を作る。単純に、幸せに暮らすための力を保つため、俺たちの収入を確保するため、また何らかの必要なカネのためにね。だけど、ライブこそがおれたちの核なんだよ。そこから全てが広がってくる。ライブは生き物だ。楽曲は同じには聴こえないし、だからこそ常に面白い。だから、あらゆるショウは、それぞれまったくの別の物なんだよ。
